Balloon Bowl

February 7, 2008 by adamprimmer

Here is a video of a skate bowl filled with balloons. I thought it was quite similar to idea of splines bending and moving with movement as the balloons behave differently depending on the speed and directing of the skateboarder.

Relief Map

I have also been looking at colour coded relief maps used in geography to show the height of land. I could incorporate this idea into my work by using could to illustrate speed and height.

Contours

February 7, 2008 by adamprimmer

The contours I placed on the ramp look similar to those found on a map. The closer the lines are together the steeper the hills on the landscape, I would like to relate this idea to my piece, perhaps showing height and speed of the skateboarder as they pass over the contours.olympus-contours.gif

Lebbeus Woods

Once I have filmed some skateboarding I will be to extract the movement from the video. I could then construct splines that bend and buckle as the skater moves through them. I am not sure if I will keep the image of the skateboarder moving through are replace it with an object. I think it would look better withe skater.  The outcome could look something like this sculpture by Lebbeus Woods:

Examples

sk8m8.com is the best examples as it uses maps to show parks in your area. However there are many parks not on there and only a few have photos accompanying them. As the information is supplied by councils only official skateparks are show and no street spots.

skateparkpages.com has the same flaws as sk8m8 and no mapping system. It also only covers skateparks and not spots.

skatemyspot.com deal mainly with street spots but has inaccurate information and few photos.

Project Idea

January 25, 2008 by adamprimmer

As my dissertation looks and mobile phones and my 4D project explores skateboarding I want to my combine the two to create my project. My idea comes from there being lack of information on skate spots and parks and how mobile phones could be used to solve this problem.

I would like to create a project where a skater can use their mobile phone to take a photo of a park/spot they have found and wants to share with others. They could then send the picture along with its GPS position to a website where all the parks/spot are stored and displayed for others to see. This means the website can be updated on the fly meaning it can be more accurate and update to date than other similar sites.

There are already websites with information on parks and spots but many do not have photos and a lot of the information either missing or inaccurate. This makes it difficult for skaters to judge if it worth traveling for miles to skate a place.
